The Ghosts of Chemmani II. One of the skeletons had a rag that had been used to blindfold the face, with the knot at the back still intact. There was a hole in the skull of this skeleton. The other’s hands were tied.

Mass Graves & Genocide: Sri Lankan Government (SLG) efforts to investigate the soldier’s allegations can best be described as damage control, rather than a systematic effort to punish an abuse.

Army Involvement at the Highest Level: At the high court, all the accused inclusive of the first accused Somaratna said that killings at that place are quite normal. If they did not do the killings at that place when the instructions are given, they had to face severe punishments. In other words, it is slaughter house not a security check point

US trained Army Commanders responsible for the mass graves? It is important for the United States and the United Kingdom to find out whether any of the above named officers, or any other officers who served in Jaffna during or at the end of the Riveresa Operations, received any training from the U.S. or British military academies.

Chemmani - Why is Sri Lanka dragging its feet The Sri Lankan armed forces have long enjoyed immunity from any prosecution or punishment for carrying out extra-judicial killings of Tamils. This culture of immunity has been assiduously promoted ever since 1956. Although the government does not issue specific orders, there is the unwritten law in the armed forces that Tamils could be killed without attracting any punishment.

Excavation an Eyewitness Account The World Socialist Web Site won the right to send its own correspondent to the scene of the excavation of mass graves of victims of Sri Lankan military butchery under the Peoples Alliance regime of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Gaps in Krishanthi Case - Asia Human Rights Commission There were several fault-lines in Jaffna. Everything was controlled by the Defence Ministry, including the transport of journalists to Jaffna. There was too much complacency. The newly promoted generals in charge of 51and 52 divisions controlling Jaffna had earned notoriety for the role they played from 1988-1990 which was the worst period of extra judicial killing.

Amnesty Statement on Chemmani Amnesty International said it had found reliable evidence suggesting that bodies of as many as 600 people "disappeared" in the area may have been disposed of in lavatory pits, disused wells and shallow graves.

Frontline Magazine. For some 400 families of Jaffna it all began when a Sri Lankan soldier, Somratne Rajapakse, was convicted in July 1998 for raping and murdering Krishanthi Kumaraswamy, a schoolgirl, while posted at the Chemmani checkpoint on the outskirts of Jaffna town. In a statement he made after he was sentenced to death, Rajapakse maintained that he was innocent and alleged that senior military officials had committed numerous human rights violations. He went on to say that around 400 of the missing persons had been buried in mass graves in Chemmani.

Human Rights Committee: Vanished without a Trace The government has spent almost eight months even to commence the preliminary examining work at Chemmani. But yet the authorities has been unable to take the only and the main witness, Corporal Rajapaksha, to the area who is able to show the exact location where the bodies are being buried. Even if the human remains have been removed from the area prior to the exhumation as it is widely suspected, the government and it's military officials should explain what really happened to nearly 700 Tamil people who are said to be ‘disappeared’ after they were taken into Army custody in Jaffna since 1996.
