Scholarship Appeal

by Tamil Youths USA

Due to war and increased poverty, there has been a disruption in the pursuit of education, and there is a strong need for our support and promise of hope for young motivated students to complete their medical school education.

Vanakkum Friends, Family, and Fellow Community Members,

As you all well know, the situation in Sri Lanka is tenuous at best, and the recent political and humanitarian upheaval lends very little hope for such a dire situation.  And yet the Tamil population ceaselessly demonstrates its resilience and ability to overcome these challenges on a daily basis.  However, it is often nearly impossible to do so without the support and encouragement of the Diaspora.

In a joint effort with Tamil Youths USA and Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (JMFOA), we are writing to express our desire to promote health care education in the Jaffna province of Sri Lanka.

Due to war and increased poverty, there has been a disruption in the pursuit of education, and there is a strong need for our support and promise of hope for young motivated students to complete their medical school education.

This year, 36 underprivileged students have been identified by a selection committee comprised of members of the Medical Student Union, Dean, Student Counselor, and Senior Treasurer.  The committee has identified these students as underprivileged based on the following criteria:

  • Total monthly income of the family is below Rs. 12,500.00
  • Father or mother or both are deceased, disabled, displaced, or unemployed
  • Any family member is suffering from chronic illnesses or malignancies
  • Dependent family members are 4 or more

We are kindly asking for your assistance in providing financial assistance to these future doctors to cover the cost of tuition and subsidized meals.  The tuition fee per year is $600 per student to attend Jaffna Medical School.  Alternatively, you can provide assistance through recommended $50 monthly installments.

All contributions are greatly appreciated and can be directed to ‘IMHO’ and mailed to: P.O. Box 61265, Staten Island, NY 10306, USA.

Alternatively, please visit http://imhousa.org/donate.html to make a one-time or monthly donation using your credit card via PayPal or direct debit.

Please be sure to include your email or mailing address in order to receive a receipt for your donation.  All donations are fully tax-deductible in the US.

Thank you for your time and consideration to save and brighten the futures of those in need.

Sincerely,

Tamil Youths USA
