SRI LANKA TAMIL NEWSPAPER'S PROOF READER MISSING IN JAFFNA
Reporters Without Borders is very concerned about the fate of proof reader Vadivel Nimalarajah of the Jaffna-based Tamil daily Uthayan, who has been missing since 17 November. His colleagues think he was kidnapped near the Navalar Road railway as he was cycling home after a night shift as copy editor at the newspaper.

"We urge the authorities to do everything possible to find Vadivel Nimalarajah," the press freedom organisation said. "We fear he may have been abducted like other Tamil journalists, in the past. This incident highlights the terrible plight of journalists in Jaffna."

Another Jaffna journalist, Yarl Thinakural correspondent Subramaniam Ramachandran, went missing in February after writing a report implicating a businessman and military officers in illegal trafficking in sand.

Uthayan's management thinks that Nimalarajah, 31, is being held at the headquarters of a paramilitary group in Jaffna and that his life could be saved if the government intervened quickly.

Uthayan is very critical of the government and has been targeted by the EPDP, a pro-government militia. Four of its employees have been killed and its premises attacked several times in the past two years.

Reporters sans frontières est très préoccupée par le sort de Vadivel Nimalarajah, secrétaire de rédaction du quotidien Uthayan, basé à Jaffna (Nord). Il n'a donné aucune nouvelle depuis le 17 novembre 2007. Selon ses collègues, il aurait été enlevé près de la voie ferrée de Navalar Road tandis qu'il rentrait chez lui à vélo, après avoir travaillé la nuit dans les bureaux du journal.

"Nous demandons aux autorités de tout mettre en oeuvre pour retrouver Vadivel Nimalarajah. Nous craignons qu'il n'ait été victime d'un enlèvement, comme d'autres journalistes de Jaffna avant lui. Cet incident illustre la situation dramatique que vivent les journalistes basés à Jaffna", a déclaré l'organisation

Reporters sans frontières rappelle qu'un autre journaliste de Jaffna, Subramaniam Ramachandran, correspondant du Yarl Thinakural, a disparu depuis février 2007. Il avait publié une enquête sur un trafic illégal de sable impliquant un homme d'affaires et des militaires.

La direction du quotidien Uthayan pense que Vadivel Nimalarajah, 31 ans, est retenu prisonnier dans les locaux d'un groupe paramilitaire à Jaffna et qu'une intervention immédiate du gouvernement pourrait lui sauver la vie.
Connu pour sa ligne éditoriale très critique envers le gouvernement, Uthayan, est la cible d'attaques de la milice progouvernementale EPDP. Au cours des deux dernières années, quatre employés ont été tués et les locaux plusieurs fois saccagés.-- --
