Where We Are Now

by Wakeley Paul, Esq.

This government lives on imaginary visions and false hopes which can only enhance the determination for separation rather than curb it.

Based on the determination of the Rajapakses to crush Tamil resistance to Sinhalese domination, the question is how do we Tamils  react? Are we ready to be treated like a child overwhelmed by an adult? Shall we submit to the government's determination to conquer us and submit to a destiny to be determined by them?

Are we to be regarded as humans so weakened, with legs like water, that nothing done to us will ever matter, even while our streets are littered with bodies, glass and chunks of metal? Do they dare to blame us and our leaders  for this devastation? Sadly, they dare to do so and actually hope to get away with it. Do they imagine we will regard our homelands as places of abasement, desperation and despair without resentment?

What does the attitude of the government  imply?  That if they slacken their grip, the birds will fly away, or that we should treat their domination with love, hope and expectation? Do they not realize that any pretense of love and acceptance would be regarded as a damaging mistake, with its accomplice hope to be viewed by us Tamils as a treacherous illusion? Do the three brothers not realize that their effort will only arouse a state of anxious anxiety among the Tamil people, rather than a delightful acceptance of their circuitous hopes and expectations that we will comply?

Is it not time that they realize that their fake comfort of appeasement is a classic example of fake diplomacy? Shouldn't they realize that a pretense of blind trust by the Tamils will be  chockful of suspicion and will be devastatingly dangerous?

This government lives on imaginary visions and false hopes which can only enhance the determination for separation rather than curb it.
