CTC Statement for its Members on Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam Elections

by Canadian Tamil Congress, April 12, 2010

As the election strives to be a democratic exercise in the Tamil Canadian community, we urge our members to learn more about the initiative, the participants, the organizers, and the process and participate in it.

In May, the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) - Canadian Branch will be holding an election to select members in Canada. Upon recently concluded meeting with Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) officials, the Canadian Coordinating Committee of the TGTE emphasized its commitment to a democratic, peaceful and transparent exercise of franchise within the Tamil Canadian community. It also noted its commitment to such principles of democracy, transparency, openness and non-violence moving forward. The plan of TGTE, based upon their communication, is to advocate for the long-term aspirations of Eelam Tamils.

As an independent Canadian organization, CTC believes democratic, transparent and peaceful initiatives, along with debate and discussion and freedom of speech and opinion are vital in moving forward on political issues. The voices of those who participate in this election, along with the voices of those on the ground, compose an essential part in the debate about the future of Eelam Tamils living in the island of Sri Lanka. As a climate of repression prevails against those who go beyond the official government line in Sri Lanka, many Tamil Canadians want to help give voice to their relatives, friends, and brethren on the island on political, social and economic issues.

As the election strives to be a democratic exercise in the Tamil Canadian community, we urge our members to learn more about the initiative, the participants, the organizers, and the process and participate in it. Ordinary CTC members can contest in the TGTE elections. However, any persons holding office in the CTC will have to resign from their position to contest in the TGTE elections.
