Brazil Urged to Raise Slaughter of Tamil Civilians with Sri Lankans

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) urged Brazil's Minister of External Relations, Antonio Patriota, to raise the slaughter and disappearance of Tamil civilians during his meeting with Sri Lankan leaders. Mr. Antonio Patriota is currently visiting Sri Lanka and is meeting Sri Lanka's President Rajapaksa. Around 60,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final months of the war in 2009, by the predominantly Sinhalese Government. UN and journalists were expelled from the area where the killing took place.

São Paulo,Brazil (PRWEB) March 7, 2011 --Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) urged Brazil's Minister of External Relations, Antonio Patriota, to raise the slaughter and disappearance of Tamil civilians during his meeting with Sri Lankan leaders. Mr. Antonio Patriota is currently visiting Sri Lanka and is meeting Sri Lanka's President Rajapaksa. Around 60,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final months of the war in 2009, by the predominantly Sinhalese Government. UN and journalists were expelled from the area where the killing took place.

"We strongly urge the Brazil's Minister of External Relations, Antonio Patriota, to raise the killing of over 60,000 Tamil civilians and the disappearance of thousands with the leaders of Sri Lanka. It is a great opportunity for you to highlight abuses faced by Tamil civilians constituting War Crimes, Crimes against humanity and Genocide. Thousands are still being held in internment camps surrounded by barbed wire. Tamil civilians look up to you with hope," said Political and Foreign Minister of Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam, Mr. Thanikasalam Thayaparan. United Nation's Secretary General Ban Ki -Moon also has appointed a committee to submit a report to him by the end of this month, whether crimes war was committed against Tamil civilians.

According to Mr. Thayaparan, Tamil civilians were massacred in the final stages of the war that ended in May 2009. He further said that hospitals were repeatedly bombed and food was prevented from reaching trapped Tamil civilians. According to the United Nations, several died due to starvation. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was prevented from treating injured civilians, resulting in numerous people having bled to death, he said. When Tamil civilians fled, they were kept in concentration camps. Several of these civilians were taken from these camps and executed. Several women were raped and subjected to gender violence, said Mr. Thayaparan.

According to Ms. Magdalena Sepulveda, who delivered a statement on May 26, 2009, on behalf of all UN Special Procedures mandate holders: "The Government of Sri Lanka…. after three months continues to detain in temporary camps the more than 300,000 men, women and children who escaped fighting….We deplore that in the camps some have already died from starvation or malnutrition." Government forces repeatedly shelled densely populated areas, including at least 30 attacks on hospitals, in the government declared "no-fire area" where it had urged civilians to take shelter.

According to the Bishop of Mannar, 146679, people were unaccounted for.

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is a democratically elected body of the Tamil diaspora from the island of Sri Lanka. TGTE held elections in 12 countries to elect Members of Parliament. The Parliament drafted and ratified its Constitution, elected a Prime Minister, a Speaker, and a 10 member Cabinet.
