Letter to Indian PM for UN Resolution on Sri Lanka

by Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America, March 14, 2012

We sincerely request that India not only firmly supports the US led initiative and resolution in favor of an independent investigation of human rights violations by Sri Lanka but also uses its status as an emerging regional economic and superpower to find more countries in support of the resolution.

Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh,

Greetings from the United States.

I am writing to you on behalf of over five hundred thousand Tamil Americans and Tamil Canadians and on behalf of Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA), a US registered, secular, cultural and non-profit organization, which is an umbrella organization of over forty Sangams (associations) across major cities in the United States and Canada. I am writing with a sincere request from all of us towards one very important issue that matters so much to us, and we hope it merits your kind and serious attention as well.

In the nineteenth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which is currently underway (Feb 27-Mar 22, 2012) with the support and sponsorship from Denmark for the EU, France, the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Norway and many other countries, United States has introduced a resolution calling for an international and independent investigation into the abuses of human rights violations committed by the Govt. of Sri Lanka on the Tamils in the north and east of that country during the final phase of the civil war that ended in May 2009.

We the Tamil Americans and Tamil Canadians and millions of Tamils around the world have their eyes and ears glued to knowing the UN resolution against human rights violation in Sri Lanka. The Tamils of Sri Lanka have an enduring and a long lasting relationship with the Tamilnadu Tamils, going back to several centuries. We feel this would be high time for India to stand with the Sri Lankan Tamils and save their Human Rights and dignity.

We sincerely request that India not only firmly supports the US led initiative and resolution in favor of an independent investigation of human rights violations by Sri Lanka but also uses its status as an emerging regional economic and superpower to find more countries in support of the resolution.

We thank you very much for your kind consideration to our request.

Sincerely,

President, FeTNA
