Inauguration of Canada’s First Tamil Language course at the University of Toronto

The University of Toronto Tamil Studies Coordinating Committee, the leading organization striving to establish Canada’s first Tamil Studies Program, will be holding its 1st Annual Tamil Studies Gala Dinner on January 28th 2006.  It is an evening to inaugurate the program into the University of Toronto and celebrate our community’s achievements. 

Through strong values of unrelenting determination, the Tamil community has prospered within the Canadian society.  It is important for our community to ensure that the younger generation grows up to remain integrated with the rest of the Tamil community.  The success of the Tamil Studies Program will ensure the existence of a permanent bridge to our heritage by increasing the sustainability of our language for future generations.  Furthermore, it will promote the growth of our knowledge as future community leaders and academics, and it will give us the opportunity to pursue careers or research pertaining to Tamil culture, history, music, arts and literature.

The goals of this committee was initiated by the University of Toronto Tamil Students’ Association in Fall 2003. Since then, they have branched out and now boast a strong connective matrix of committed students from various universities. Through their combined efforts to promote the importance of teaching Tamil at the University level, they have been able to accomplish great feats.
