Dignity
by Chandi Sinnathurai
How long will you bomb us?
And try your best to destroy us?
Yet in the rubbles
And in the stench of death
You have created for us
We will quietly stand
We will rise up
Raise our heads to the sky
And shout FREEDOM!
How long will you shackle us?
With your immoral laws based on apartheid views?
How long will you present us to the world
As ruthless terrorists and wild mannered beasts?
O, Cinhala friends, we don’t hate you
But it’s your hatred that has made us strong
Don’t get us wrong; you will never break our spirit.
We will quietly stand
We will rise up
Raise our hands to the sky
And cry FREEDOM!
How long will you rape us?
Our land and the sea, our women and children?
Katpu is something that we guard with honour
Yet with your terror you want to humiliate us…
How long will you intimidate us; shoot and kill us
Like stray dogs in our homelands?
How long will you make us to fight for our survival?
How often will you forget that we too are a proud nation?
How many times do you want us to tell you?
That we too are human beings
Yet you constantly ask us
To prove our humanity!
That’s simply a proof of your arrogant vanity
We will quietly stand
We will rise up
Raise our being to the sky
And whisper THAMIL EELAM!
