Association of Tamils of Sri Lanka in the USA
from E. Satkunarajah
In the last four years of relative peace in Sri Lanka, there have been scores of high-ranking officers from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) violently and systematically killed by paramilitaries and the state armed forces. The LTTE and various other parties brought the covert war of the state against the LTTE to the attention of the international community numerous times. |

Dear Sir/Madam,
Re: Tamil civilians are being bombed and shelled by
the state forces in Eastern Sri Lanka. Dangerous and
destructive full scale war on Tamils is imminent
Tamil civilians are being bombed and shelled by the
state forces in Eastern Sri Lanka as a reprisal for
what happened in the capital Colombo on April 25th.
Sinhalese extremists and hardliners, political parties
in south likethe JVP, JHU, etc are working tirelessly
against the peace openly and calling for the Tamils to
be punished in the form of aerial bombing and shelling
by the state forces.
In the last four years of relative peace in Sri Lanka, there
have been scores of high-ranking officers from the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) violently and
systematically killed by paramilitaries and the state
armed forces. The LTTE and various other parties
brought the covert war of the state against the LTTE to
the attention of the international community numerous
times. The international community failed to hold the
Sri Lankan state responsible for these cowardly acts.
The latest event is a pure product of the spiraling effects
of violence unleashed by the Sri Lankan state forces
and paramilitary forces against Tamils.
The EU and the international community should bring
adequate pressure on the Sri Lankan government to
strictly adhere to the peace process. The EU and the international community should condemn this violence and
covert operations against the LTTE.
The EU and the international community should send a
clear signal to the Sri Lankan government to pursue
a just and fair solution to the Tamils'
problems. The current Sri Lankan
president is only offering lip service to peace to deceive the
international community, while appointing hardliners to
the arms services to take the country to the war path.
If you look back the last 50 year history, there is always a contradiction between what the Sri
Lankan leaders say in public and what
they do to the minority Tamils on the ground. Both southern extremists and anti-Tamil forces
are being used by the state as a spoiler to prolong
this bloody war in which innocent Tamils' lives and
their hard-earned properties are systematically
destroyed.
Many Tamil intellectuals and political workers were
assassinated by state forces or paramilitaries; to
name a few: the well known lawyer, Mr. Kumar
Ponnambalam, well known military affairs journalist
Mr. D. Sivaram (Taraki), journalist Mr. Richard De
Zoysa, BBC reporters Mr. Nimalarajan and Mr. Nadasan,
Prof. Thambiyah, Tamil MP, Mr. Chandraneru, Mr. Joseph
Pararajasingam MP, Mr. Vigneswaran and many more innocent
civilians.
I humbly request the EU and the international
community to persuade the Sinhalese government not to
bomb the innocent Tamil civilians. In the same breath,
I would like to also request the EU member states and
the international community to persuade the Sri Lankan
government to make sincere effort to solve the Tamil
issue, and not to conduct
a covert war against their negotiating partner.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours truly,
