Leadership Training for Refugee and Immigrant Women
Refugee Women’s Network, Inc. (RWN) has begun preparations for the eighth cycle of the Leadership Training for Refugee and Immigrant Women.
You are invited to nominate a refugee or immigrant woman leader, or self-nominate if you are a refugee or immigrant woman to participate in RWN’s training. Registration will be limited to 20 women, in order to preserve the small group dynamics that enhance interactive learning.
RWN’s interactive training model is based on “Training for Transformation” an approach to community development adapted from Paulo Freire’s pedagogy. It emphasizes critical thinking, active listening, and group facilitation to develop community solutions. This program is offered nationally to increase the ability of refugee and immigrant women to:
* Identify critical issues within the communities;
* Facilitate group decision-making to develop solutions for and by the community;
* Evaluate when help is truly helpful and when it is not; and
* Identify and procure resources for sustaining programs.
Eligibility criteria include:
* Experience as a refugee or immigrant woman;
* Understanding of issues affecting refugees and immigrant women;
* Commitment to organizing a local training; and
* Willingness to represent a diverse group of refugee and immigrant women.
Participants must commit to attending the training held May 12-16, 2004 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The application deadline is April 1, 2004 and all applicants will be notified of their status by April 16, 2004.
