PEARL’s latest report: No Trials, Only Tribulations for Tamil Victims of Sri Lanka’s Conflict-related Sexual Violence

Washington D.C.; August 31, 2022 — The Sri Lankan government is unwilling to investigate and prosecute those responsible for conflict-related sexual violence against Tamils, People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) said in a report released August 31 2022. Consequently, to end the long standing impunity faced by victims, states with universal jurisdiction laws should investigate and prosecute alleged Sri Lankan war criminals most responsible for conflict-related sexual violence as an international crime.

The report titled, “No Trials, Only Tribulations for Tamil Victims of Sri Lanka’s Conflict-related Sexual Violence,” tracks emblematic incidents of, and legal action or inaction concerning, war rapes and sexual mutilation of women and girls, often accompanied by their murder; postwar rapes and sexual exploitation of women and girls; and historical and ongoing rapes and sexual torture of male and female detainees.

“Universal jurisdiction and international criminal justice mechanisms, existing or new, can end 40 years of impunity for Tamil war rape survivors and murdered victims,” Ravichandradeva said. “The UN Human Rights Council and its members should use all available tools to ensure the investigation and prosecution of Sri Lankan perpetrators responsible for war rapes, sexual mutilation, and ongoing sexual torture.”
