TfO: More Needs to Be Done
by Tamils for Obama, March 28, 2013
“Nothing except an international investigation is likely to produce an acceptable result, the letter concluded.”
Thank You for Resolution, But More Needs to Be Done
Tamils for Obama, a group of politically active Tamils in the US, wrote to the president thanking him for his and the State Department’s perseverance in pressing the resolution, but then notes that the resolution falls short by asking the Colombo government to investigate itself.
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 27, 2013
The US recently offered a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva calling for the Rajapaksa government to investigate war crimes committed during the recent Sri Lankan civil war.
Tamils for Obama thanked the president for the US’s perseverance in offering this
resolution, which is almost identical to one the US offered at last year’s UNHRC meeting.
“The world community is always vocal in its support of justice and human rights in the most general way, but timid and reticent when the time comes to deal with specific violations and specific violators,” the letter stated. Only the US, Tamils for Obama noted, has consistently denounced the crimes committed against the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
US Ambassador in Geneva Eileen Donahue
“We see this and we are grateful for it,” said a spokesman for Tamils for Obama. ” We think it is a good idea to internationalize the issue. Saying it in public, like at the UNHRC, puts it out in front where it cannot be ignored by those who are too timid to talk about it.”
The letter then notes that the resolution is inadequate because “It calls for the Rajapaksa government to conduct an investigation … into crimes against the Tamils.”
“This makes us dizzy,” the spokesman said. “Having criminals investigate themselves is a topsy-turvy idea. Calling on the criminals to investigate themselves is foolish”
The letter then points out that the Colombo government is good at “delaying and avoiding any accountability for its crimes, while it continues its criminal acts.”
“Regrettably, we are helping the Sri Lankan government,” the spokesman said. “Calling for Colombo to investigate its own crimes just gives them another way to delay for another year.”
Nothing except an international investigation is likely to produce an acceptable result, the letter concluded.

Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.

The Letter to the President
March 26, 2013
The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States of America
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Obama:
We thank you and admire you for the administration’s, and the State Department’s, persistence in sponsoring the recent United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) resolution on Sri Lanka.
The world community is always vocal in its support of justice and human rights in the most general way, but timid and reticent when the time comes to deal with specific violations and specific violators. The US, alone among the important nations of the world, has noticed and spoken of the violations done to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. We see this and we appreciate it. Putting this problem out front, where it cannot be ignored by the nations which would rather not see it or acknowledge it, is a positive step. We want to internationalize this issue, and we thank the Obama administration for putting the issue out in front.
However, there is a problem with this resolution. It calls for the Rajapaksa government to conduct an investigation into wartime and on-going oppressive crimes against the Tamils. This makes our heads spin. The very idea of calling on the criminals to investigate their own crimes and then find themselves guilty or innocent is preposterous.
The Colombo government has become highly skilled at delaying and avoiding any accountability for its crimes, while it continues its criminal acts. Unfortunately, the US has given them assistance in prolonging this delaying game. Only an international investigation can give a satisfactory result. We hope the US will shift its priority to this goal.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Tamils for Obama
