New Film Shines a Light on U.S. Detention of Asylum Seekers

You’re invited to a sneak preview of Chasing Freedom, a new Court TV movie inspired by a Lawyers Committee for Human Rights asylum case. Chasing Freedom stars Juliette Lewis as a corporate lawyer who takes on the asylum case of an Afghan woman, played by Layla Alizada, who flees Taliban persecution only to be detained when she arrives in the United States in search of refuge. The event is also the kick-off of the Lawyers Committee’s “Write Ridge” campaign to improve fairness for asylum seekers in the United States.

Inspired by true events, Chasing Freedom tells the story of Libby Brock and her client Meena. Libby is an ambitious corporate lawyer who is awakened to the world of bureaucracy and injustice when she reluctantly takes on the pro-bono case of a young Afghan women seeking political asylum. Fearing for her life, Meena has escaped the oppressive Taliban regime in Afghanistan only to find herself caught in the web of INS bureaucracy. The movie depicts LIbby’s fight to win Meena political asylum in the United States, with a sobering depiction of the nearly insurmountable obstacles that asylum seekers face.

Active Voice is facilitating the Chasing Freedom Campaign which is a unique collaboration using popular media as a tool to build support for human rights.

WIth the January 19, 2004 premiere of the original Court TV movie Chasing Freedom, the Campaign will focus public attention on a host of issues, including the detention of asylum seekers in jail-like conditions. The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (LCHR) provided content support to Court TV throughout the development of the Chasing Freedom screenplay.
