Joint Computer Training Center in Jaffna by TITA and London Kanagathurkai Amman Temple Trust

TITA and London Sri Kanagathurkai Amman Temple Trust (SKTATT) have joined hands to open a Free Computer Training Center, on Thursday the 9th October 2003. This Center will be opened at Kilner Lane in Jaffna.
The SKTATT has undertaken to provide full sponsorship for this Center including capital cost and recurring expenses. TITA will look after the administration, teaching, course planning and other activities to be spearheaded by the center in its region. The center will be started with 10 PCs and will be run as a FREE Computer Training Center. Underprivileged students and youth will be given priority in admission process.
SKTATT has also joined with TITA to open another Rural IT center in Vaddakkachchi (Kilinochchi district), towards the end of this month.
The SKTATT is one of the very active organisations operating among the Tamil Diaspora, providing several services to the war-affected Tamil Speaking society in North, East and Upcountry of Sri Lanka. They have donated a total of £323,517 in 33 months, to date, according to one of their recent news releases to the press. They are already running two FREE training centers in the East, at:
1. SKTATT FREE IT Centre, Thiruppalukamam, Batticaloa.
This center has 10 PC’s and is managed with the help of Social Welfare Organisation (SWO) in the East.
AND
2. SKTATT FREE Sewing Training Centre, Thiruppalukamam, Batticaloa.
This is also managed with the help of the SWO.
The SKTATT is also helping 500 children in 16 orphanages in Sri Lanka and out of the 16 orphanages 4 are run in the name of SKTATT Illam. More details are available about these orphanages at http://www.changetheirlife.org, a site maintained by SKTATT.
TITA would also like to take this opportunity to recall with gratitude a previous instance in which SKTATT supported TITA’s activity. The SKTATT sponsored the cost of a 4-month long IT Training Programme conducted by TITA from March 2002, for underprivileged students in Trincomalee, at the Vocational Training
Center, Uppuveli, with material help from the Department of Industries, of the North-East Provincial Council.
The Kilner Lane Computer Center will be the third IT Center run by TITA in the Jaffna district. The other two centers are already running in Inuvil and Velanai.
TITA expresses its sincere thanks to the SKTATT for coming forward to join hands in TITA’s Rural IT Center Project. TITA also welcomes other Tamil Social Welfare organisations in Europe, USA, Canada and Australia too, to take part in this project to take fundamental IT Education to our Rural Villages and underprivileged youth.

TSVP donated PCs at work! – New Rural IT Center in Bogawanthalawa

TITA’s first Rural IT Center in the upcountry region is to be ceremonially opened on Saturday the 11th October 2003 in Bogawanthalawa. Although groundwork to open this center was completed by TITA volunteers in July this year, TITA was waiting for the 2nd set of PCs donated by The Student Volunteer Program (TSVP – http://www.tsvp.ca), Canada, to arrive at the Colombo port. As the TSVP computers were received last week, 3 of those PCs have been taken from Colombo to Bogawanthalawa on last Friday by the appointed coordinator of the Bogawanthalawa Rural IT Center.
Mr.P.Kannan, a third year undergraduate at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, has been appointed as TITA’s coordinator for this center. TITA’s Batticaloa district coordinator Mr.Y.Gobinath and Mr.P.Kannan were instrumental in the ground work to set up this Rural IT Center.
This will be the 11th Rural IT Center to be run by TITA in the North, East and Upcountry.

Kallady (Batticaloa) Rural IT Center ceremonially opened on the 10th Sept 2003
—
TITA ceremonially opened its 9th Rural IT Center with the help of VISIONS and TYHR (Tamil Youth for Human Rights), USA, in Kallady, Batticaloa on the 10th of Sept 2003. The TYHR has sponsored the capital and set up costs for this center through the VISIONS. The center is now functioning at, No. 199, Main Street, Kallady, Batticaloa.
The following courses will be offered at the center for underprivileged students and youth of adjoining villages:
1. Certificate in Computer Applications
2. Computers for Kids
3. Certificate in Programming with Visual Basic
Already 111, 14 and 13 students have been selected for the above 3 courses respectively. There are also plans to conduct special teaching programmes for students in certain orphanages in the Batticaloa district as per VISIONS’s request.
Mrs. K. Nadarajah (Teacher), Mr. K. Nadarajah, Mr. S. Arulanandan (Principal Barathi Vidyalayam), and Mr. R. Nithiyananthan (Teacher) honoured the opening ceremony of the center as special guests.
