Sabapathy Thillairajah 1928 – 2023
Born in Jaffna, Irupalai Koppai on 23-02-1928 and resided in Thoppu, Achuveli and Maryland, USA.
Sabapathy Thillairajah passed away on Wednesday 22-11-2023 in America.
Beloved son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sabapathy.
Beloved son-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vallipuram of Thoppu Achuveli, Tamil Eelam.
Beloved husband of the late Rasamma.
He is also the loving father of Kanthan, Velan and Murugan.
Mr. S. Thillairajah started his advocacy for Eelam Tamils in the 1950s. when he was in the clerical service of the Sri Lankan government bureaucracy. He and a few other Eelam Tamils including Mr. Vaikundavasan started putting together newsletters and booklets in the 1950’s about the discrimination that the Tamils had facing since independence. In the 1950s, as a student in UK, he and fellow Tamil students including his friend from Central College (high school) Mr. J.M. Rajaratnam, did a protest with placards in front of Buckingham Palace (UK Parliament?) against Sri Lanka’s 1956 Sinhala Only Act which discriminated against Tamil-speakers.
There was a Ceylon Students Organization (CSO) for all Ceylonese students in the UK in the 1950s. According to Mr. Thillairajah in 1957, they had 5 Sinhalese and one Tamil – Mr. Thillairajah – on the board. When it was time for election, he contested and campaigned for the President position and all five Sinhalese were going to elect him. On the day of the election Mr. Thillairajah found some Sinhalese people outside the meeting with sticks to beat the Tamils. He had to call the police from the building and the meeting was canceled by the police. Then the Tamils Students left the CSO and started the UK Tamil Association.
In the 1960s Mr. Thillairajah created many economic development projects in the Northeast along with like-minded folks from Colombo/Jaffna.
Thillairajah moved to the USA in 1971 to work in the World Bank and continued some of his development projects in the Northeast. Mrs Thillairajah was one of the founder-members of Eelam Mathar Sangam (Eelam Women’s Association) during that time. Thillairajah remained at the World Bank for the remainder of his career. He was posted to New Delhi in 1979 and later worked on Africa.

Thillairajah was one of the founder-members of the Ilankai Tamil Sangam USA in 1977, founder member of the Washington/Baltimore Tamil Sangam in the late 1970s and a founder-member of the Tamils Human Rights and Welfare Committee in the 1980’s. He organized the memorial event for many years after the 1983 Black July anti-Tamil pogrom. He was an active member of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization USA.
He invited many scholars, Members of Parliament from Sri Lanka and political leaders from Tamil Nadu to Washington. DC, and arranged public meetings, including one with journalist and activist David Selbourne in early 1985. There were many memorials also held, including for Kumar Ponnampalam and MP Joseph Parararajasingham.
His House in Bethesda was an Eelam House and the Thillairajahs were the host of most of the many Eelam-related guests from abroad and around the US. People from out of state who came for rallies/protest marches in Washington DC were always welcome to their house for meals.
After retirement Thillairajah improved his computer skills and used them to gather and organize advocacy materials for the UN, International NGOs, others in the international community, Country leaders, Legislators, Nobel Peace Prize winners, etc. He was able to access many directly through email. Even after his eyesight declined dramatically a few years ago he used computer modifications to see and read materials and used them for outreach and advocacy. He also enjoyed searching for his favorite meaningful and inspirational Tamil songs and shared the joy with friends.
Mr. Thillairajah continued his advocacy and humanitarian projects in Tamil Eelam until he passed away at the age of 95 years old this year.
Thillai read this Sangam website religiously during its entire existence, gave concrete suggestions for improvement and regularly sent materials to be posted. He will be greatly missed.

Mr Thillairajah is my relative, friend and mentor. Throughout his life he worked tirelessly to uplift our community.
In his early adult life, he and few others in our village wanted to build a library. He lead the fundraising activities, amongst which included selling tickets for a dance concert by Vyjayanthimala (Indian actress and dancer). He did not waiver in his efforts till the library building was completed.
Whilst working at the KKS cement factory, he would spend his evenings giving free tuitions to the younger children in our village.

அனைவர்க்கும் “தில்லை மாமா ” “ராசம் ஆச்சி ” !
ஆச்சியின் கைவண்ணம் ,புன்னகை, அன்பு மறக்க முடியாதவை .
மூன்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் அங்கு பெரியார் பன்னாட்டமைப்பின் சார்பில் மாநாடு நடத்தினோம் .
நேரத்தின் மிகவும் நெருக்கடி . இருந்தும் “அய்யாவைக் கண்டிப்பாகப் பார்த்தே ஆகவேண்டும் ” என்று ஆசிரியர் வீரமணி அவர்கள் சென்று பார்த்து வந்தார் .
தில்லை மாமா கடவுள் நம்பிக்கையின் முழு உருவம் .ஆனால் மனித நேயத்தின் சிகரம் !
முதன் முதல் அவரை எனது மிகவும் நெருங்கிய ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் முனைவர் பெஞ்சமின்ராஜ் அவர்களுடன் மிகப்பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் சந்தித்தேன் .
இவ்வளவு பெருமையுடைய மனிதரா ? இவருக்குத் தெரியாதது எதுவுமே இல்லையா ?மற்றவர் பேச வேண்டாமா என்றுதான் நினைத்தேன் .
பின்னர்தான் அவருடைய பெருமைகள் , அவர் அவரது நெருங்கிய நண்பர் அய்யா ராசரெத்தினம் இவர்களுடைய நட்பும் அன்பும் கிடைக்கப்பெற்றேன் .
அம்மா ராசம் அம்மையார் நினைவு மலர் ஒரு இதய அஞ்சலி .
கடைசிவரை உடல்நிலை தளர்ந்தும் உள்ளத்து உத்வேகத்துடன் உலகின் பல அருமையான ஈழ ஆதரவுச் செய்திகளை பெரிய கண்ணாடி வைத்துப் பார்த்து நாள்தோறும் மின்னஞ்சல் அனுப்புவார் . அதை நான் பல முக்கிய அமெரிக்க அலுவலர்களுக்கு அனுப்புவேன் .அவருடைய தகவல்கள் அவருக்கு மட்டுமே கிடைக்கும் அறிய தகவல்களாக இருக்கும் .
அய்யா தங்கள் உள்ளத்து வேட்கை தீரும். ஈழம் மலரும் !

Thillai Uncle, that is the way I used to address him giving the due respect he deserved, has been a mentor and an advisor to me for many years. Although I have never met him we kept in constant touch. He used to prompt me to write about our struggle for Self Determination time to time and used to send me materials to help me to do this. What I have written on Cyber Space (you can find a sample in Tamilnation.org if you search under “Dr. Victor Rajakulendran”) I did mostly prompted by him. Even though his eyesight was very poor (I could feel it from the spelling mistakes he makes which were obviously typing errors) he used to write me requesting me to write. He also used to send me old favourite Tamil classical songs which I have saved in a file as I used to sing along sitting in front of my computer while playing these songs. Recently I have started singing in public when I get opportunity during our radio organization Dinners and other dinners. I will miss him a lot.
புலம்பெயர் வாழ் தமிழ் மக்களில் தமிழ் மொழிமேலும் தமிழ் மக்களின் நன்மைகள் கருதியும் வாழும் நற்பண்புகள் கொண்ட ஒரு மாமனிதர் திரு.தில்லைராஜா. எப்படியும் வாழலாம் என்று வாழாமல், இப்படித்தான் வாழவேண்டும் என்று வாழ்ந்து காட்டிய ஒரு லட்சிய மகான். அவருடன் எனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட நட்பு சுமார் ஐம்பது வருடங்களுக்கு மேலாகும். எனது கணக்கியல் ஆசானும் நண்பரும் ஆன திரு. சின்னத்துரை ( Burah Hathy ) அவர்கள் மூலமாக இலங்கையில் முதன் முதலில் அறிமுகம் கிடைத்தது. திரு சின்னத்துரையும் திரு திரு தில்லைராஜாவும் சிறந்த நண்பர்களுக்கு ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டாக வாழ்ந்தவர்கள். அன்றியும் திரு. தில்லைராஜா இலங்கையில் ஒரு உயர் பதவியில் இருந்து, புகழ் பெற்ற உலக வங்கிக்கு சென்று பணியாற்றி எம்மவருக்கு பெருமை சேர்த்தவர். எனவே ‘ ஒரு பெரியாரை காண்பதுவும் பெரிதே ‘ என்ற கோட்பாட்டுக்கமைய அவரை சந்தித்து மனமகிழ்ந்தேன்.
சில வருடங்களுக்கு பின் நானும் எனது குடும்பத்துடன் அமெரிக்கா ( நியூயார்க்) குடியேறி, 1984ம் ஆண்டு ஒரு சமயம் தில்லை மாமாவின் நண்பர் பாலா துரைசாமி – ராணி குடும்பத்துடன் அவர்களின் ‘பெதஸ்டா’ இல்லத்திற்கு விஜயம் செய்திருந்தோம். அன்று தில்லை மாமி எமக்கு அளித்த உணவை இன்றும் ஞாபகத்தில் உள்ளது. அது அறுசுவை பதார்த்தங்கள் மட்டுமல்ல அன்பும் கலந்து பரிமாறிய உணவு. அன்று, ஒரு விருந்தோம்பலுக்கு இலக்கணம் எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதை கண்டு நெகிழ்ந்தேன். தில்லை மாமாவும் தில்லை மாமியும் வள்ளுவரும் வாசுகியும் போல் வாழ்வதை நேரில் கண்டு வியந்தேன்.
‘இருந்தோம்பி இல்வாழ்வ தெல்லாம் விருந்தோம்பி வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு’
என்ற குறளுக்கு விளக்கமும் கண்டேன்.
பின்பு, ஒரு முறை கலிஃபோர்னியாவில் அவரின் உறவினரின் இறுதிச்சடங்கில் இருவரும் சந்தித்த பின் நேரில் காணும் வாய்ப்பு கிட்டவில்லை. ஆனால் கணினியும் மின்னஞ்சல்கள் மூலமாக பல வருடங்களாக எம் உறவு தொடர்ந்துகொண்டே இருந்தது. 2009ம் ஆண்டு எம் தாயகத்தில் நடந்த யுத்தத்தின் காரணமாக எமது மக்கள் பலர் வாழ்வாதாரம் இழந்து கஷ்டப்பட்டார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு புலம்பெயர் வாழ் தமிழ் மக்களும் அமைப்புகளும் தம்மாலான உதவிகளை செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். நானும் ஏதாவது செய்ய எண்ணி இரண்டு புத்தகங்கள் எழுதி அதில் வந்த வருமானத்தை கொடுத்துதவினேன். இதற்கு தில்லை மாமா செய்த உதவிகளும் ஊக்கமும் அளப்பெரியது. தான் மட்டும் உதவிகள் மனமுவந்து தருவதோடு தன் நண்பர்கள் பலரையும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி அவர்கள் மூலமாகவும் உதவிகள் பெற்றுத்தந்தார். நான் அவருக்கு எந்த உதவிகளும் செய்யாமல் இருக்க, அவர் செய்த உதவிகள் அவர் என் மேல் வைத்திருந்த அன்பையும் அபிமானத்தையும் எண்ணிப்பார்த்து அவரின் பெருந்தன்மையை வியக்கிறேன்.
தில்லை மாமாவின் நல்ல பல வழக்கங்களில் ஒன்றை இங்கு குறிப்பிட விரும்புகிறேன். அவர் தமிழ் மொழியிலும், தமிழ் இசையிலும் தாயகத்திலும் வைத்திருக்கும் ஆர்வத்தை அவரின் நண்பர்கள் பலர் அறிந்திருப்பீர்கள். அவர், தனக்கு பிடித்த ஒரு பாடலை, தான் மட்டும் ரசிப்பதோடு உற்றார் உறவினருடனும் பகிர்வதில் ஆர்வமாக இருப்பார். பெரும்பாலும் அந்த பாடல்களுக்கு வசனங்களையும் எழுத்துக்களையும் சேர்த்து அவர்கள் வாசித்து மகிழ வேண்டும் என எண்ணி அனுப்புவார். சிலசமயம் அவருக்கு சில பாடல்களுக்கு எழுத்துக்கள் கிடைக்காமல் போக என் உதவியை நாடுவார். நான் அந்த பாட்டை கணினியில் பாட விட்டு எழுதி அனுப்புவேன். அவர் அதை பாடலுடன் சேர்த்து தன் வட்டத்துக்கு அனுப்பி மகிழ்வார். சில வேளைகளில் ‘என்னை அடிக்கடி தொல்லை கொடுக்கிறேனோ’ என்று தயங்கும் போதெல்லாம் அவரின் தமிழ்ப்பற்றை ஊக்குவிக்கும் முகமாக மகிழ்வோடு உதவுவேன்.
தில்லை மாமா மூப்பின் காரணமாக இவ்வுலகை விட்டுச் சென்றார் என்று சொல்வதை விட அவர் தன் ‘ஆச்சி’ யிடம் சென்றார் என்று சொல்வதே மிகப் பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும். அவர், தில்லை மாமியை ‘ஆச்சி‘ என்றுதான் அழைப்பார். பத்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன், எல்லாமே அவர்தான் என்று வாழ்ந்து பின் அவர் இல்லாமல் வாழ்வது எத்தனை துன்பம் என்பதை நாம் நன்கு உணர்வோம். எனவே ,அவர் தில்லை மாமியிடம் சென்றடைந்தார் என எண்ணி ஆறுதலடைவோம்.
தில்லை மாமா ஒரு சிறந்த மனிதராக, ஒரு அன்பான கணவராக , பாசமுள்ள தந்தையாக, ஒரு அருமையான பேரனாக ஒரு நல்ல பண்பாளராக, ஒரு தமிழ் பற்றாளராக, வாழ்ந்து விண்ணுலகை அடைந்தார் என்பதை எண்ணும் போது நாம் எல்லோரும் பெருமைப்படலாம். தில்லை மாமா இந்த உலகில் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்ந்து வானுறையும் தெய்வங்களில் ஒருவராக திகழ இறைவனை பிரார்த்திப்போம்.
