Role of Tamil Nadu to Pressure India for Strengthening UNHRC Resolution on Sri Lanka
World Thamil Organization, Inc. (WTO) is a Registered, Non-Profit organization, incorporated in the United States of America. Since its inception in 1991, WTO has been espousing the legitimate cause of Tamils wherever they live. The Tamil people, like any other people of the world, are entitled to their inalienable right to freedom, liberty to live with all the political rights and dignity, and protection for their lives and properties, as enunciated in the United Nations Charter.
We, at WTO, thank all the leaders in Tamil Nadu as well as other parts of India for the positive steps they have taken in demanding the Indian Government to support a strong resolution at the 22nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva in order to effect truly meaningful positive changes in Sri Lanka. We note with great appreciation the justified demands put forth by the students of Loyola College, Chennai, and supported by the students of many educational institutions in Tamil Nadu on behalf of our Tamil kith and kin who are subjected to all kinds of atrocities by the chauvinistic, fascist Sinhalese Government.
The United Nations High Commissioner Ms. Navi Pillay, in her February 11, 2013 report to the UN Human Rights Council, has clearly and unambiguously called for an “Independent, credible International Investigation” for the mass atrocities committed against the Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka. Instead of merely supporting the US-sponsored Resolution, India must take the initiative and bring amendments to the Resolution by calling for an independent, international Commission of Inquiry (COI) to be set up. This COI, we are sure, will bring Rajapakse and other war criminals to stand trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, as was meted out to President Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia.
WTO strongly believes that the only solution for the Tamil national problem in Lanka lies in creating an independent, sovereign Tamil Eelam which the Tamils lost. It should be borne in mind that the Portuguese, and later the Dutch, ruled the traditional Tamil and Sinhalese Nations separately, without altering the borders between these Nations. The British who wrested control of Ceylon from the Dutch also ruled these two Nations separately for several decades. Only in the year 1833 did the British, for their administrative convenience, amalgamate the Tamil and Sinhalese Nations! When they left in 1948, the British gave the entire island on a silver platter to the majority Sinhalese, depriving the Tamils of their legitimate rights. Therefore, the Tamils, based on the right of self- determination recognized by the United Nations Charter and other Conventions, have every right to regain and restore the sovereignty they lost and reconstitute the Nation of TAMIL EELAM in their ancestral homeland in the North East of Lanka where they have been historically living for thousands of years.
